If you’ve been thinking about becoming a life coach for months — or even years — then you might want to read this.
One of the biggest things that stops people from taking that first step is not knowing the exact process, what type of certification they need and worrying whether they’ll be good enough,
So let’s break it down, How to Become a Life Coach in the UK: A Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Decide What Type of Coach You Want to Be
Before anything else, get clear on who you want to work with and what results you want to create. What struggles will your ideal clients have been through? What outcomes are they looking for? Getting specific here will determine firstly what your certification needs to include, who your niche will be, and how you will market to them.
Step 2: Choose the Right Coaching Certification
Not all training is equal. Our advice is always to choose a certification that can produce the exact results you want to see in your clients.
For example, people come to us because we work at a level above traditional life coaching. We work on the mindset that is keeping clients stuck — not just the goal setting. When you’re researching courses, look at what level the qualification is equivalent to. Our programme is the equivalent of a Level 4 Diploma, which means a certain standard of teaching hours, hands-on experience, and live training is built in.
Step 3: Look for an Accredited Coaching Qualification
Accreditation means the programme has been delivered to a standard approved by a governing body — and it also means you can become accredited upon graduating. While the coaching industry isn’t regulated in the UK right now, accreditation future-proofs your practice for if and when that changes.
Look for courses accredited by one of the top three bodies:
- ACCPH – Accredited Counsellors, Coaches, Psychotherapists and Hypnotherapists
- AC – Association for Coaching
- ICF – International Coaching Federation
Step 4: Plan Your Timeline
Work out how many hours a week you can realistically dedicate to your certification — then plan accordingly. For example, studying around four hours a week, you could graduate from our programme in approximately five months. If you want to qualify faster, simply increase your study time each week. This is the first step in any business plan, work out the end goal and then work back to create the strategy to achieve it
Step 5: Deal With the Fear
I know you weren’t expecting this to be a part of the steps!
Whether it’s your goal of becoming a coach or the goals your future clients will bring to you. Fear is almost always what holds people back: fear of it not working out, fear of not being good enough, fear of the unknown.
Face them head on. Ask yourself: what am I most worried about?
If it’s not knowing how to get clients, work with an academy that teaches business alongside coaching. At Unbreakable Mindset, our graduates have the option to add on our Scale Your Certification business programme — a step-by-step process for getting fully booked with clients. We also offer graduate supervision once you’re working with paid clients, a monthly marketing strategy session, and a launch strategy session to identify your quickest route to market.
Step 6: Work Out Your Income Potential
One of the most common questions we get asked is: what should I charge, and how much can I earn?
Setting your pricing structure from the beginning is key to ensuring your not just helping others but you’re creating a sustainable business — a business that supports both your success and your work-life balance. Our graduates comfortably charge £2,497 for a 12-session programme.
