When you start to research how to become a life coach, it can be very overwhelming to know what you actually need — and what I want to cover here for you is: Do You Need Accreditation to Be a Life Coach in the UK? (And What Actually Matters More)
What Is Life Coach Accreditation?
Life coach accreditation is a recognition granted by professional bodies. The purpose of this is to verify that a coach has gone through a process of training that meets competency, ethics, and industry standards.
Think of accreditation as the stamp that says not only has this person trained to a high standard, but they continuously do this year on year.
Accreditation isn’t a one-time thing — it’s renewed yearly.
The most common industries that require accreditation are: Solicitors/Barristers, Architects, Financial Advisors/Planners, Health and Social Care Staff, and Teachers/Educators.
Life coach accreditation is a voluntary recognition granted by professional bodies — such as the International Coaching Federation (ICF) or Association for Coaching (AC) — verifying that a coach’s training, ethics, and competencies meet high industry standards.
While life coaching is unregulated, accreditation validates a coach’s qualifications, boosts credibility, and increases employability.
Is Accreditation Legally Required in the UK?
At the moment — at the time of this article being published — coaching is not a regulated industry and therefore does not require accreditation.
So Why Do So Many Courses Emphasise Accreditation?
If you choose a course that has been accredited, you are assured that the course has gone through a certain set of standards to be able to deliver the training material.
They have proved themselves as a credible training academy, and the content they are delivering and the way in which they deliver it has been given a seal of approval by industry standards.
For example, we have been accredited with 2 governing bodies at the equivalent of a Level 4 diploma.
The Benefits of Getting Accredited
The benefit to the academy is that they can prove to you they are reputable to a high standard. In terms of what benefit this is to you — this means that you will be able to get accreditation yourself as an individual, setting you apart from other coaches and future-proofing you if the industry gets regulated.
The Limitations of Accreditation
It will absolutely set you apart as a credible coach, but it won’t teach you how to get clients. If you know you need additional business support on how to market yourself, choose a course that has business training included. We offer a Scale Your Certification Business Programme that has all of the latest marketing trends and skills you need to find your route to market and get a steady influx of clients.
What Actually Makes a Successful Life Coach?
This is what will set you apart more than anything. When we are going through the student application process, we are looking for students who have empathy, understanding, the ability to listen, and the ability to withhold judgment. Those are the traits needed. We also know how important it is to do this work on yourself first — so as you are working through the course, you will be doing this transformational work on yourself first. We instil an Unbreakable Mindset in all of our coaches. The ability to create unbelievable results in your clients with a proven framework is what will get you more clients — clients who go on to shout about you, clients who are visibly more confident, will sell you. Knowing how to attract clients is the last piece, and making sure you have a robust marketing strategy is where we come in with Scale Your Certification.
What Accreditation Body Is Credible in the UK?
There are a few out there, but the course you want to enrol on should at least be within one of the top 3:
- ACCPH – Accredited Counsellors, Coaches, Psychotherapists and Hypnotherapists
- AC – Association for Coaching
- ICF – International Coaching Federation
What to Look for in a Life Coach Certificaiton
- Find a course that is accredited.
- Find a course that delivers the results you want to see in your clients — for example, if you want to help someone remove their anxiety, you would want a course that’s focused on coaching in that area.
- Find a course that gives you a framework — a guide on how to use the tools, not just a million tools with no clear direction on how to create results.
- Find a course that allows you to coach a real person as your volunteer. There are many courses out there where you are only coaching the people in your intake — almost like role play rather than real results with a real person. If you want to create results and change, then you want to be able to confidently know you can do it.
Finally
If you’re looking for training that gets you accreditation and actually prepares you to coach, book a call.
