When the Universe Forces You to Slow Down: A Lesson Every Coach Needs to Learn

A Lesson Every Life Coach Needs to Learn

By Jude Daunt | Unbreakable Mindset Academy

When Life Slows You Down

After two weeks of being unwell—cold, sore throat, brain fog, coughing—the kind of “Covid that’s not Covid”—I’ve been reminded that sometimes the universe doesn’t give you what you want, it gives you what you need.

And for me, that lesson was simple: Jude, slow down and stop trying to rush everything.

As coaches, we talk a lot about alignment, flow, and trust. But how often do we actually embody it when things feel uncertain?
These last two weeks have reminded me that when you slow down, you don’t lose momentum—you gain clarity.

The Non-Academic Coach

Before running the Unbreakable Mindset Academy, I worked in retail. As a single parent with a regional role and multiple projects, I was always rushing. I skimmed emails, multitasked, and jumped from one thing to another.

For the most part, my job was within my comfort zone—except for anything that involved reading details.
At school, my habit was always to skim read, do things quickly, and get them out of the way. I’m not academic by any means; I’m hands-on and creative.

So my go-to pattern was to rush through anything that felt uncomfortable so I could get back to what excited me.
That carried into adulthood—and while it didn’t cause too many problems in retail, it’s different when you run your own business.

In business, you can’t always delegate the parts that aren’t your zone of genius. You have to sit in the discomfort and do them properly.

Learn the Joy of Ease

When we’re impatient, what we’re really craving is ease.
We want the result, the reward, the reassurance. But impatience creates pressure, and pressure creates resistance.

In coaching, that’s exactly what blocks progress—for our clients and for ourselves.

Positive psychology calls this psychological flexibility—the ability to adapt, stay open, and trust even when things feel uncertain.

That flexibility is vital when running your own business. It allows you to hold space for clients who are in resistance, without taking on their energy or rushing their process.

So if you’re learning to coach others, start by mastering this within yourself.

How to Shift from Force to Flow

If you notice you’re in resistance—whether that’s impatience, frustration, or overwhelm—these four steps will help you return to ease and flow:

  1. Awareness: You can’t release what you don’t recognise. As a coach, awareness is your most powerful tool. The same goes for your clients—help them notice their patterns before they try to change them.
  2. Regulation: Ease begins in the body. When you’re dysregulated, your brain scans for danger—and that’s when fear and impatience take over. Acknowledging that you’re safe is powerful. Have a conversation with yourself: What am I worried about? What’s the worst-case scenario? How can I problem-solve it?
  3. Trust Trust that what’s meant for you (or your client) won’t miss you. This mindset helps you hold the bigger vision when clients doubt themselves—because trust builds safety, and safety builds growth.
  4. Aligned Action Take the next step without trying to control the outcome. That’s what moves clients—and coaches—from force to frequency.

The Lesson

If you want to become a life coach, these moments of slowing down are your training ground.
They teach patience, presence, and emotional regulation—the skills that separate good coaches from great ones.

The universe often uses everyday experiences to shape us into the mentors we’re meant to be. So the next time you’re frustrated or feeling stuck, ask:

“What lesson am I being given right now that will make me a better coach later?”

Ease doesn’t slow you down—resistance does.
And when you release pressure, everything you want (and everything you’re here to teach) moves closer.
